Snowmageddon Aftermath

So how bad was Snowmageddon? Well, here are a few pictures from the belly of the beast! Remember - we're talking about the DC metro area here... not Minnesota! The official snowfall at the airport was 18 inches, but I measured 24 inches in our neighborhood and other places have reported around 30 inches.

For the past two days, it has been cold but sunny - just enough to make a nice slush out of the roads. Now the little snowfall that is due to arrive tomorrow has been upgraded to a major winter storm with 10 to 20 inches of MORE snow - We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of Snowzilla! The week will be interesting!

Here I am right after the FIRST attempts to clear the sidewalks in the morning. At this point, the storm still had 12 hours to go.

A sidestreet with a few people out in the snow. Neighbors worked hard with each other to dig out the snow, but it only piled up again and again. The only place to put snow was in someone else's way!

You can see that the depth of this this snow was already above my knees. It was right about 10:00am when I took this picture.

Even after plowing the roads several times, there was too much more to plow. The cars in the background are not only covered in snow, but are wedged in by the snow plow drift which was 3 feet wide and 3 feet high!

So here is one of those cars I was talking about - and the storm wasn't close to being over at this point. After this, I chilled out for the afternoon and then went out as the storm was ending. You can see a few more pictures after the storm below.

Evergreens took a big hit in the storm, The snow was thick and wet. It stuck to everything and as it built up, the heavy snow just bent the trees to the ground... yes, there are also cars under those trees!

Here is a local bike trail through the woods. It is much more beautiful than the picture shows.

The sun was falling, so I used the flash for this shot. Every tree limb had snow stuck to it! Beneath the trees, the snow was only about 15 inches deep and only a few people had trekked the path.

Another side street in our neighborhood at 6:00pm. You can just barely see two guys still digging on the left behind a pile of snow. Each neighbor dug out their own driveway, but the result was 5 foot piles of snow and barely one lane for traffic.

As I said, the snow was wet and sticky - perfect for making snowballs and snowmen (and snow kittens). By mid day Sunday, many more snowmen had sprung up all over the neighborhood.

Snowmageddon!

I took my camera and snapped a picture about every 15 minutes or so to document the coming "SNOWMAGEDDON". After nightfall, the temperature got low enough that snow built up and froze on the window, so I stopped around midnight. Still, it's interesting to see the snow start and accumulate!

When all was said and done, here is what the scene looked like the next morning... and the storm was only half over!
