East Coast Colt

A couple of weeks ago, Jessica brought her oldest boy Colt to our house for several days while she went to a business meeting... What a great time I had with them - mostly Colt! When I was a young parent, I'm not sure I'd have taken Jessica on a plane when she was 18 months old by myself but that is when she did!

I met them at Dulles airport. They had a direct flight from OKC (very nice) and Colt was in a good mood. Of course, he had to check in with dad, so mom gave him his iPhone... No really... he has his own iPhone!

Colt's phone is Jessica's old iPhone. She upgraded to the iPhone4 because it has the front facing camera and she has a family video call with Owen and John each night. but he already knows how to talk on it!

We dropped off their stuff at our condo and then immediately walked down to the nearby park. Objective: see the ducks! The plane ride hadn't dimmed Colt's enthusiasm. He explored the park with enough energy that we had trouble keeping up!

Back at the house, it became apparent that Colt really like the stairs. He liked to climb the stairs and come down the stairs. He liked to do it over and over again... ALL BY HIMSELF! It was great entertainment for everyone!

Naptime was predictably unpopular, but we made the most of it.It was hard to put him down for a nap in a strange room, but it paid off later after mom got home!

On Thursday, it was stormy weather outside so we played inside most of the day. We walked around the hallway - which makes a big circle... Colt liked to test all of the doors to see if it was the right one. It was always a surprise when we got back to our door and got to open it.

In the afternoon, the Great Grandparents came over to visit and naturally, we had to show off on the stairs!

It turned out that there was actually a tornado less than a mile away that day! In fact, trees fell across the parkway and Metro tracks which caused DeAnna to be very very late.

Colt and I waited at the Metro stop for an hour and a half waiting to pick her up. Colt was strapped in his car seat the whole time and didn't get fussy at all. We sang and laughed and talked. I was so proud of him!

On Friday, I took Colt down to the park again. The weather was clear, but air was humid and the ground was wet. That didn't stop us from sliding down the slide and running in the grass!

The playground was nice and the wet grass was nicer, but as any boy will tell you, the best part about an overnight rain is the puddles that are left in the morning! And I am happy to report that I was the one to teach Colt how to throw rocks in the water!

Later that day, we all went down to the Potomac River and threw rocks just like George Washington! I think I have created a rock-throwing monster!

We joined the Great Grandparents at Primos for pizza and then went to their 21st floor condo to visit. It was the first time Colt had seen the balcony and like his mother 25 years ago, immediately went to the rail to take a look... through the rails and over the edge!

Actually, we were all prepared since mom & dad remembered the terror of when Jessica almost flew through the same rails long ago. Colt was never in any danger.... The evening was enjoyed by all!

On Saturday morning, we took Colt into Washington DC to see some sights. Though it was a really nice day, Colt had reached the end of his patience. We walked around on the mall, grabbed some lunch at the Smithsonian and then headed home.

He slept most of the way back where we packed for their trip back to Oklahoma. It was such a nice visit all around and I really enjoyed visiting with Jessica. They are an amazing family and the boys are wonderful grandchildren. I am blessed to be able to spend time with them! I am looking forward to our next visit!
