Shark!

DeAnna is now back in Virginia getting our new house all set up. The movers have already come and we're both starting to throw things away! In the meantime, I've been packing up stuff and clearing out a year and a half of accumulation. It's amazing how much stuff seems to just find it's way into your daily life. We sent home two suitcases with DeAnna and I've already sent home several boxes.

So for a break, I joined a group diving at Electric Beach today. Electric Beach is so named because it is the site of one of the electric generator plants on Oahu. It uses seawater to cool the generators and then it discharges the warm seawater about 50 yards off shore from two huge pipes.

Being on the Leeward side of the island, the water is very clear. In addition, the warm water attracts lost of sealife. It's never more than 30 feet deep, so it's nice and light and your tank of air lasts almost an hour! I swam around the discharge pipes for a while then around the reefs off shore. I saw several turtles, lots of colorful fish, a few moray eels and then a large shark!

The Whitetip shark was resting in a small cave about 15 feet deep. It was about 6 feet long and pregnant. I had attached the camera to my dive float, so I swam up, grabbed it and took a picture or two!

I hope to dive at least once per weekend before I leave the island for good in May. I don't know of many really good dive sites in the Washington DC area, but I could be wrong...
