John & Jessica Day 3

On Monday, I went in to work for the morning (nothing new there). Jessica and John drove to the North Shore to explore "Lost" film sites (places where they film the ABC TV show called "Lost"). They found some exciting places and got to see some of the island on their own. When I got home, we ate lunch and Jessica joined DeAnna and I for a hike to the Dragon's Nostrils!

This made the 4th time I've been to this site and it's a serious hike in the afternoon. Jessica took it in stride as we hoofed it up the trail to the cliff down to the lava shelf. Good thing we bought reef shoes on Saturday! The waves were powerful and the blowholes were really blowing!

The hike was exhausting but worth the effort. Jessica and John turned-in early so they could be ready for the big golf game on Tuesday. Click HERE to read Jessica's account on her blog.

A Voice From the Distant Past--

Joe, Betty ran across your blog and showed it to me over the weekend. Sounds like life is good and we're happy for you. Then again I'm jealous of anybody getting paid to live in Hawaii for a year, and a mid-life change of career sounds revitalizing. Glad its all working out.

Where did you order the inflatable snorkel vests? We learned years ago that it wasn't always easy to keep yourself above the coral in surf, and started hauling along some K-mart kick boards that just scream tourist with us. (Really helps buoyancy just stuck under your chest, until they decide to shoot out from under you at a really bad moment. Vests might be better).

We were in Maui early this month and caught a week of really flat water. After years of trying and at least 25 swims out we finally caught Black Rock on a really calm day. We got clear out around the end and back into the cut where the fish are really thick. Next day Betty heard about a less popular place (Makena Landing, south of Wailea, behind the Maui Prince hotel). Horizontal reef, not vertical like Black Rock, but really wide. Saw my first eel having lunch (much too close for comfort), and even an octopus. Worth the trip if you can work it in.

Later,
